Addressing Gender Base Violence through the Use of ICT

Aware Girls understands the importance of Digital Media in shaping the attitudes of communities. Therefore, Aware Girls is using Information and Communication Technologies to address to address Gender Base Violence. The program comprises of the following three initiatives

  1. Marastyal Helpline
  2. Digital Stories for addressing Gender Base Violence
  3. Digital Campaigns to address Gender Base Violence

i. Marastyal Helpline

Aware Girls launched Marastyal Helpline in January 2013, through the Helpline, AWARE GIRLS will provide referral services to the women victims such shelter, legal aid, medical aid etc. The scope of services given through referral mechanism will include Information about nearest police station, Guidance in filing of FIR, Information on shelters/crises centers, Information about lawyers (available either on voluntarily basis or on minimum charges), Information on Ambulance service for emergency,  Information on medico legal services. The victims will be facilitated to access these services. The main office of the Helpline will be in Peshawar which can be access both through the helpline and direct meetings, while in each target district there will be a Helpline Counselor (Expert Psychologist) who will provide professional psychological, emotional and legal counseling to the women and will provide referral services to the victims of gender base violence.

ii.  Digital Stories for addressing Gender Base Violence

Digital Story telling is a powerful technique, which gives women the platform and opportunity to share their personal stories with other people and to advocate for addressing the issue. Aware Girls conducted One week workshop on the Use of ICTs for addressing Gender Base Violence, Blogging, and Digital Story Telling with 25 young women of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in partnership with KIOS and Digital Rights Foundation. The trained girls developed their own blogs to write about the issue of gender base violence and developed Digital Stories which are widely used by the trained young women activists to raise awareness about gender base violence, these digital stories are inspirational, it mobilizes other women to break the cycle of silence around violence, and encourages everyone to support women who dare to speak up.
